BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific hypertensive syndrome
associated with significant morbidity and mortality in mother and neonate due to
complications.
Method: All 518 consecutive women with severe preeclampsia at Haji Adam Malik
General Hospital were assessed between January 2011 and December 2012. Parity,
gestational age, type of delivery, common causes of cesarean section, birth weight
and neonatal complications and mortality were included as study variables.
RESULTS: Gestational age in severe preeclamptic women was 36,53 + 0,6 (weeks). The
most common indication of cesarean section in severe preeclamptic women was eclampsia
(4,S%). The most common delivery complication in severe preeclamptic women was blood
transfusion (5,8%). Birth weight was statistically significantly lower in women with severe
preeclampsia (p < o.001), and APGAR score was significantly lower in women with severe
preeclampsia (p<0,001).
CONCLUSION: Maternal and neonatal complications consisted of blood transfusion, Acute
Kidney injury or renal failure, abruptio plancentae, postpartum haemorrhagic, plmonary
edema, neurologic complications, and fetal demise were more common in severe
preeclamptic women. Low birth weight and APGAR score for the first and the fifth minute in
women with severe preeclampsia.
