Background :Preterm delivery is the major cause of fetal mortality and morbidity
until now. The mean rate of preterm labor cases are ranging between 5-18% in
worldwide. Estriol is the main estrogen and mostly in the serum of pregnant women.
lncreased levels of estriol has shown drastically exactly in 24 weeks before labor.
Methods: This study is an analytic study with cross sectional design. The subject are
the patient who had. preterm delivery and normal pregnant women in H. Adam Malik
Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, University of Sumatera Utara. The main ingredient in
this study is the saliva which taken from women who delivered preterm and normal
pregnant woman. Total estriol levels in saliva were measured using the Salimetrics
Estriol / High Sensitivity (lHS) Estriol Enzyme lmmunoassay Kit.
Results: This study was conducted on 21 women with preterm labor and 20 women
who had normal pregnancy. The study in preterm group has shown mean value
salivary estriol levels higher at 846.46 t 437.90 while the normal research groups
shown mean value salivary estriol levels lower at 134.13 t 54.62. Based on statistic
with Mann-Whitney test because the data were not normally distributed , has
obtained p value <0.05, which indicates a significant difference value of salivary
estriol levels in women who had preterm delivery and normal pregnant women.
Conclusion: There arc differences in salivary estriol levels in women who had
preterm delivery and normal pregnancy. Measurement of salivary estriol levels every
1 to 2 weeks to predict preterm delivery has been approved by FDA. Salivary estriol
levels should be examined at 25 weeks gestational age.
