Background
Almost 400 million people in the world had suffered from chronic hepatitis B
and 15 - 40% of them will be going to be cirrhotic and end stage liver disease.·
Cirrhotic and end stage liver disease were due to fibrotic process in chronic
damage of the liver. Nowadays study has showed that liver fibrosis is a
reversible process. Neutralisation of respond of Hepatic stellate cell (HSC) by
inhibition fibrogenic signaling transduction is one of the method to treat liver
fibrosis. Pentoxifylline is a drug that act by modulating fibrogenic signaling
transduction and would give an antifibrotic effect to liver fibrosis.
Objective
To assess the decreased of hyaluronic acid (HA) serum level on chronic
hepatitis B patients before and after given pentoxifylline
Method
We conduct clinical trial on 15 chronic hepatitis 8 patients with an increased
ALT (>1.3 times) and measured HA serum level before and after oral
pentoxifylline 400mg tid for 4 weeks.
Result
After 4 weeks therapy we had result decreased of mean of ALT(79,67±19,88
vs 68,07±13,9; p=0,007'), AST(68,2±35,65 vs 51,8±16,43; p=0,001), total
bilirubine (1,60±1,72 vs 1,11±0,72; p=0,005) and HA serum level
(713,72±434,76 vs 554,81±330,86; p= 0,08).
Conclusion
Oral pentoxifylline given tor 4 weeks as antifibrotic to liver fibrosis in patients
chronic hepatitis B and measured by HA serum level was not significantly
enough but effective to decrease AST, ALT and bilirubine.
