Tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon) has great potential in fishery product of North
Sumatera. Intensification of tiger prawn catching that done by fisherman in Karang
Gading estuary, Deli Serdang could affect the tiger prawn’s density, length frequency distribution and growth pattern. This research aimed at analyzing the
density, length-frequency distribution and growth pattern of tiger prawn in Karang
Gading estuary area. The main location of tiger prawn sampling was determined by
purposive sampling method and were chosen three sampling sites as research areas.
Sampling of tiger prawn is done for 2 months by interval 30 days once used mini
trawl with as long as 10 m and dimension of 3 m x 2 m (6 m2
). Based on research,
the biggest tiger prawn density was found in the second station (5,167 ind/m2
), while
the smallest density was found in the third station (2,167 ind/m2
). The length frequency distribution was dominated by class interval 3,84 cm till 4,61 cm as many
as 20 shrimps. The growth pattern showed that negative allometric, where the biggest
b value was found in the first station (2,131), so the length-weight equation was W =
1,0623L2,131, while the smallest b was found in the third station (1,1468) and its
length-weight equation was W = 3,4959L1,1468. The psycho-chemical characteristics
in Karang Gading estuary still support for tiger prawn’s living. The nursery ground
preservation of tiger prawn in this area must be controlled well by government and
local communities.
