The title of this research is Tradition of Jujuran: Women in Nias
Traditional Marriage System (Study on Nias Tribe Families in Medan City).
Jujuran is a tradition of the Nias people, which is a gift given to a woman's family
by the groom in the form of pigs, gold, silver, and rice. Women in patriarchal
cultures are always placed in a second-class position both in the circle of
community life and cultural life. The method used in this research is descriptive
with a qualitative approach. Determination of informants using purposive
sampling technique, by interviewing 11 informants. The presentation of the data
refers to the Commodification Theory to show the forms of gender injustice
experienced by women both due to the jujuran tradition of marriage and gender
inequality in the Nias tribal family institutions. The results of the study show that
the construction that is formed in the family has been internalized in the life of the
individual and has become a habit that is understandable. Marriage culture has its
own uniqueness in its implementation. This is part of the local wisdom of a
region. The existence of an encounter between patriarchal structures and
capitalism influenced the determination of the value of jujuran tradition in the
Nias marriage system. The bargaining process that occurs in determining Jujuran
Tradition shows that women tend to be objects that are exchanged through
marriage jujuran with social status such as women's education and work as
indicators of their determination.
