Hospital is an important part of a health system because hospital provides a
complex curative and emergency services, and functions as a center of reference as
well as a center of science and technology transfer.
In providing a professional service, nurses are required to have their
accountability according to their competency. Based on the preliminary survey done
in dr. Djasamen Saragih General Hospital in Pematang Siantar in January 2007, it
was found out that the satisfaction level of the hospitalized patients was relatively
still low (400/4) and the remaining 60% stated that they were not satisfied with the
nursing service available. This patients' dissatisfaction was related to the low
productivity of the nurses in providing nursing service.
The purpose of this analytical survey study is to analyze the factors which
influenced the productivity of the nurses serving in the in-patient wards of dr.
Djasamen Saragih General Hospital in Pematang Siantar. The population of this
study was all of the 116 nurses serving in the in-patient wards of dr. Djasamen
Saragi,h General Hospital in Pematang Siantar and all of them were selected to be
the samples for this study through total sampling technique. The data for this study
were obtained through questionnaire distribution. The data obtained were analyzed
through Chi-square and multiple logistic regression tests.
The result of Chi-square test shows that there was no significant relationship
between the variables of age, sex, level of education, nurses ' length of service, and
work facilities and the level of nurses ' productivity, yet there was a significant
relationship between work environment, hospital's policy, and incentives with the
level of nurses' productivity.
The result of multiple logi, stic regression test with level of confidence of 95%
shows that the variable of hospital policy had the most dominant relationship with the
level of nurses' productivity with p = 0.002, then followed by the variable of
incentives with p = 0. 026, and the variable of work environment with p = 0. 048.
It is suggested that the nurses always develop good work relation with their
fellow nurses, the hospital management should provide complete the equipment to be
used by the nurses in doing their job, and improve the working hour and break time
regulation system.
