Faktor-Faktor yang Berpengaruh terhadap Perilaku Merokok pada Wanita di Universitas Islam Sumatera Utara (UISU)

Abstract

Smoking has become the big problem in Indonesia; it can cause many health problems which will eventually end with death. smoking habit is not only done by men but also by women, including female students. According to the data of WHO, 22% of women smoke throughout the world of all smokers. There is about 3% of women smoke in Medan. The objective of the research was to find out some factors which influence smoking habit in women at UISU (the Islamic University ofSumatera Utara), Medan. The research used case control approach. The population was 56 female students who smoke at UISU, Medan. The samples consisted of 112 respondents: 56 of the belonged to case group and the other 56 belonged to control group. The data were analyzed by using bivariate analysis with chi square test and multivariate analysis with multiple logistic regression test, supported by an SPSS software program.

The results of the bivariate analysis showed there was the influence of self- image (p = 0.001; OR =39.938), sibling's behavior (p = 0.04; OR = 3.889), peers'

behavior (p = 0.001; OR= 53.267), and advertisements (p = 0:001; OR= 18.333) on the incidence of smoking in women. The result of Multivariate analysis showed that there was the influence of self-image (p = 0.001; OR= 18.977) and peers' behavior (p = 0.001; OR = 33.542) on the incidence of smoking in women. Peers' behavior was the most dominant factor which influenced the incidence of smoking in women at OR value of 33.542. It is recommended that the management of the university apply KTR (No Smoking Area) and prohibit the canteen in campus to sell cigarettes. Families and friends should support female students who actvely smoke by reminding, suggesting, and convincing female smokers. Advertisements and posters about the danger of smoking should be installed in public places with the sanction imposed on those who violate it.
