Background Probiotics treatment was claimed to offer several functional properties including stimulation of immune system and has an important role in atopic dermatitis (AD). Objective To determine the effectiveness of probiotics therapy in atopic dermatitis. Methods A randomized controlled trial was conducted on 62 children suffering from AD from December 2015 to January 2016. The severity of AD was assessed based on the scoring of atopic dermatitis (SCORAD) index. Subjects were divided into two groups consisting of 32 and 30 children in each group. The case group received both probiotic and emollient therapies, meanwhile, the control group received only emollients therapy. SCORAD index was re-evaluated after 2 weeks of therapy. The data was analyzed using Mann Whitney test. Results There was no significant difference between SCORAD index in the case and the control group before intervention (p=0.522). Mean SCORAD index reduction in the case group was 12.23 which was better than the control group 7.83. However, there was significant differences between mean SCORAD index the case and control group after intervention (p=0.010). The NNT score of probiotic treatment was 5.3. Conclusion The addition of probiotic therapy with conventional therapy effectively lower SCORAD index in atopic dermatitis.en_US
