Persepsi Masyarakat tentang Peran Pendidikan untuk Menaikkan Status Sosial ( Studi Kasus Dusun Sidodadi Paluh Merbau Kecamatan Percut Sei Tuan Kabupaten Deli Serdang Provinsi Sumatera Utara )

Abstract

This thesis describes a study on the life of the people of Dusun Sidodadi, Paluh Merbau, Kecamatan Percut Sei Tuan, Kabupaten Deli Serdang, Propinsi Sumatera Utara and their perception on the role of education to improve social status in order to understand why many children of secondary school age do not continue their study. This thesis was written based on the qualitative analysis of the data found through a field research on the phenomenon occurred in Dusun Sidodadi, Paluh Merbau in which many children of secondary school age do not continue their study after graduating from the S.D (Primary School) located in their village. The data of this phenomenon were obtained through interview and observation of their daily activities in their village. Interview and discussion done were focused on two groups - the elder people group and the school age children group. The purpose is to understand the factors causing most of the children graduated from the primary School in Dusun Sidodadi, Paluh Merbau do not continue their education to Junior High and Senior High Schools and University. Theoretically, one of the causes of the phenomenon is the negative perception of community on the education itself that the children especially those who are graduated from Primary School lost their interest and are not motivated to continue their education. This perception of community on education especially the role of education to improve social status is discussed in this thesis. The result of field research shows that the cause of the previously mentioned phenomenon is not their negative perception on education, but because of the things that influence their motivation to continue their study. This study reveals that positive perception on education and its role to improve social status are not strong enough to motivate the children to continue their study to a higher level. The other supporting factors such as availability of fund and adequate environmental condition, either social or physical environments such as road and transportation, because Junior and Senior Schools and University are located outside of or far from Dusun Sidodadi, Paluh Merbau. Therefore, it is suggested that the government establish Junior and Senior High Schools or Senior Vocational School in Dusun Sidodadi, Paluh Merbau as well as provide road betterment.

Tesis ini berisi deskripsi dan kajian tentang kehidupan warga masyarakat Dusun Sidodadi Paluh Merbau Kecamatan Percut Sei Tuan Kabupaten Deli Serdang Propinsi Sumatera Utara dan persepsi mereka tentang peran pendidikan untuk menaikkan status sosial, untuk memahami penyebab banyaknya anak-anak usia sekolah menengah yang tidak melanjutkan pendidikan. Penyusunan tesis ini didasarkan pada analisa kualitatif dari data basil penelitian lapangan tentang fenomena yang terjadi di Dusun Sidodadi Paluh Merbau yaitu banyaknya anak-anak usia sekolah menengah yang tidak melanjutkan pendidikannya setelah mereka tamat sekolah S.D. di dusun. Data mengenai fenomena ini diperoleh melalui wawancara dan observasi terhadap aktivitas mereka setiap harinya di dusun, wawancara terhadap penduduk dan diskusi terfokus dalam kelompok-kelompok yang sengaja dibentuk, yaitu kelompok orang tua dan kelompok anak usia sekolah. Tujuannya adalah untuk memahami faktor-faktor penyebab, mengapa kebanyakan anak-anak lulusan sekolah dasar Dusun Sidodadi Paluh Merbau tidak melanjutkan pendidikannya ke SL TP, SMU, dan Perguruan Tinggi. Secara teoritis, salah satu penyebab fenomena tersebut adalah persepsi masyarakat yang negatif tentang pendidikan itu sendiri, sehingga anak-anak lulusan SD khususnya, tidak berminat dan tidak tennotivasi untuk melanjutkan pendidikan. Persepsi masyarakat tentang pendidikan itulah yang diungkapkan dalam tesis ini, khususnya peran pendidikan untuk menaikkan status sosial. Dari basil analisa data lapangan diperoleh kesimpulan bahwa temyata penyebab fenomena di atas bukan persepsi mereka yang negatif tentang pendidikan, melainkan oleh karena adanya hal-hal yang mempengarubi motivasi mereka untuk melanjutkan pendidikan itu. Dalam penelitian ini terungkap bahwa temyata persepsi yang positif saja tentang pendidikan dan perannya untuk menaikkan status sosial tidak cukup kuat untuk: memotivasi mereka untuk berusaha melanjutkan pendidikan ke jenjang yang lebih tinggi. Haros tersedia juga faktor-faktor pendukung lain berupa ketersediaan dana dan kondisi lingkungan yang memadai, baik lingkungan sosial maupun lingk.ungan fisik, antara lain prasarana jalan dan sarana transportasi, karena sekolah lanjutan, seperti SL TP dan SMU/SMK hanya ada di luar Dusun Sidodadi Paluh Merbau. Oleh sebab itu pemerintah perlu mendirikan Sekolah Lanjutan Tingkat Pertama (SL TP), Sekolah Menengah Umum (SMU), ataupun Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK) di Dusun Sidodadi Paluh Merbau dan sekaligus memperbaiki jalan umum.
