Abstract
This research is entitled "Accommodation of Intercultural Communication of Afghan
Refugees with Communities in Medan City". This study aims to determine the process of
accommodation of intercultural communication between Afghan refugees and the people
of Medan City, the obstacles experienced and efforts to overcome the existing obstacles.
The theory used is Intercultural Communication, Cultural Acculturation and
Communication Accommodation. This research method is descriptive qualitative. The
main informants in this study were refugees from Afghanistan and triangulation
informants, namely employees of the My Mansion shelter and Immigration employees of
class 1 specifically for TPI Medan. The data collection techniques of this research are
interviews, observation and documentation studies. The data analysis technique uses the
stages proposed by Miles, Huberman and Saldana, namely the data condensation stage,
the data presentation stage and the conclusion drawing stage. The results showed that the
process of accommodation of intercultural communication between Afghan refugees and
the people in Medan City was carried out through a strategy of convergence or
divergence, while excessive accommodation was not found. The obstacles they experience
are communicating both verbally and nonverbally, especially the use of Indonesian
language and the efforts used to overcome these obstacles are improving Indonesian
language skills such as taking Indonesian language classes, using google translate,
making friends with local residents so that it is easy to absorb local culture.
