| dc.description.abstract | Belawan Sicanang village was one of villages in the district of Medan
Belawan. The mangrove forest were found in this region. However, along with the
development of human activities, it could threaten the existence of mangrove
ecosystem with the action of logging and land conversion. This research aims to
described the causes of mangrovedegradation and described the management
strategy of mangrove ecosystem inBelawan Sicanang village.This research was
conducted on February–April2017 and used descriptivequalitative and SWOT
Analysis for sustainable mangrove ecosystem management strategy.Mangrove
species found were : Avicennia marina, Avicennia alba, Bruguiera sexangula,
Rhizopora stylosa, Excoecaria agallocha, Lumnitzera littorea, Acrostichum
speciusum, Sonneratia caseolaris, Sonneratia ovata andNypa fruticans.The
calculation of mangrove cover changes in 2007-2017 period, obtained that
mangrove area is reducedabout 120 hectares. The causes of mangrove forest
degradation in Belawan Sicanang village were due to the used of land for
economic activities such as aquaculture, human needs of mangrove wood and the
absence of regulations in the protection and management of mangrove ecosystem
in this area as well as the leaked of law enforcement over land conversion that
occurred.SWOT analysis quadrant for mangrove ecosystem management in
Belawan Sicanang village found at 1st quadrant which is Growth Oriented
Quadrant,it means in this village has the strength and opportunity so that it can
mobilize all internal potential to exploit the existing opportunities. First quadrant
brings in the S-O strategy which become alternative priority Strategy for
