In the fisheries, milkfish (Chanos chanos) is known as one of the products of
aquaculture ponds. Milkfish has a very big role in increasing ponds production and food
needs of society. This study aims to determine the effect of mangrove vegetation on
milkfish production and water quality in ponds Silvofishery. This study was conducted
from May to October 2013 in Tanjung Ibus Village Sub-district Secanggang District of
Langkat. This study was conducted at two locations, that is pond 1 mangrove with
medium density, and pond 2 mangrove with low density. Mangrove vegetation analysis
conducted by measuring the density of seedlings, saplings, and trees on each ponds.
Water quality sampling and plankton in the ponds conducted at the inlet and the center of
the ponds as much as 4 times repetition, which is when the seed will be release, two
month maintenance period, a four month maintenance period, and a five month
maintenance period. Milkfish production data retrieval conducted directly at the study site
during the harvesting process.
Density of mangrove seedlings in ponds 1 was 202 ind / ha, saplings 111 ind / ha,
and trees 958 ind / ha. Density of mangrove seedlings on ponds 2 was 56 ind / ha,
saplings 272 ind / ha, and trees 47 ind / ha. Water quality in ponds 2 generally have the
criteria for milkfish aquaculture compared with ponds 1. Abundance of plankton in ponds
2 higher than on ponds 1, the abundance is obtained by using method calculation the
abundance of plankton. Milkfish production results obtained after 5 months of
maintenance that is in ponds 1 is 388 kg and in ponds 2 is 592 Kg.
