Background: Tinea corporis is a dermatophytosis on non-hair bearing skin (glabrous kin) except the palms and soles. Direct microscopic examination to identify fungal structures is a rapid, simple, affordable technic and have been widely used as an early screening test. Nevertheless, it can yield false negative results in up to l5% of the cases. The introduction of centrifugation measure will yield more homogenous specimens and concentrates in order to increase the accuracy and reduce the false negative results, Objective: To compare the accuracy of microscopic direct preparation examination of l0% KOH with centrifugation and without centrifugation in patients with tinea corporis. Method: This study was a diagnostic test of tinea corporis using direct examination with 10% KOH with centrifugation and without centrifugation by using fungal culture as the gold standard. Subjects: Thirty patients suspected of tinea corporis based on history taking and dermatologic examination. Results: The values of the diagnostic test of this study for the direct examination using 10% KOH without centrifugation were: the sensitivity was 42,31o/o, specificity was 75%, positive predictive value was 91,67%, negative predictive value was 16,67%, positive likelihood ratio was 1,69, negative likelihood ratio was 0,76, the accuracy value was 46,67%, and on the examination of 10% KOH with centrifugation, the sensitivity was 88,46%, specificity was 75Yo, positive predictive value was 95,83Vo, negative predictive value was 50%, positive likelihood ratio was 3,53, negative likelihood ratio was 0,15, the accuracy was 86,66%. Conclusion: The results of the diagnostic test using l0% KOH examination method with centrifugation was better than the method without centrifugation. The 10% KOH examination with centrifugation would be a very good method in the diagnosis of tinea corporis accompanied by fungal culture.en_US
