dc.description.abstract | Background: Patients with epilepsy must be treated with longterm anti
epileptic drugs. Many long term epileptic drugs have weight gain as side
effects. Valproic acid is one of the antiepileptic drugs which can increase
body weight.
Objective: To determine the relationship of long term usage of valproic acid
and body weight in epileptic child
Methods: A crossectional study was conducted on Pediatric neurology
outpatient clinic Haji Adam Malik Hospital Medan in May - June 2016.
Subjects were children aged < 18 years old had epilepsy, using monotherapy
antiepileptic drugs for a minimum of a 3 month period. Statistical analysis
using x test, with Cl 95%. Significant value was set at P < 0,005
Results: Eighty eight subjects fulfilled the inclusion criteria, 44 were using
valproic acid < 1 years and 44 were using valproic acid > 1 years. Children
who consumed valproic acid > 1 year will experienced increased weight gain
3,687 times compared to children who consumed valproic acid < 1 year.(PR
3,687; Cl 95% 1,280-10,620; p 0.001),
Conclusion: There are a significant relationship of long term usage of
valproic acid and increasing of body weight. | en_US |
