Background: The main etiology of periodontal disease is bacterial plaque
accumulation. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (A. actinomycetemcomitans),
known to have an important mle in periodontal disease. Scaling and giving
antimicrobial to get rid of these bacterial, The use of antimicroba can cause side
effect such as microorganisme resistance- For that reason herbal theraphy can give
altemative option for antimicrobial. Punica granatum has been proven to have
antimicrobial, antioxidant and antiinfl ammatory effect
Objectiver the purpose of this study was to determine and analyze the effectiveness of exlract peel of punica granatum for inhibirs the growth of some bacteria in
periodontal pathogens (in vitro study)
Methods:. The peel of punica granatum was extracted by percolation method using
ethanol, n-hexane and ethyl acetate to produce a viscous extract pomegranate skin.
The extract was diluted to a concentration of 25Yo, 12.5o/o, 6-25o/s,3,125%, 1.61250/o
and 0.8%. Each concentration was tested its ef}'ectiveness against A.
actinomycetemcomitans, P. gingivalis, F.nucleatum on nutrient agar media.
Results: peel of Punica granatum was efrracted using ethanol at a concentration of
259lo has the sfongest antibacterial effectiveness against the tkee bacteria. With a
diameter of inhibition against A. actinomycetemcomitans 16.9 mm, P.ginglvalis 16.8
mm and F.nucleatum 16.35 mm, There are statistically significant differences
between the tested concentrations ranging from a concentration of 25o/o to 0.8% with
a marked value ofp <0.05
Conclusion: peel ofPunica granatum extract has an antibacterial effect in inhibiting
the growth of bacteria A. actinomycetemcomitans, P, glngivalis, F.nucleatum-
