The purpose of this paper is to know and understand: what the meaning of
Mangain Marga is and what the process in Mangain Marga is. The data from this
paper is a form of the tradition of the Batak society. The method used in this paper
is descriptive qualitative research, by collecting books, information from the
internet and the Toba Batak society: Traditions are values, ideas, beliefs, habits
that are passed down from one generation to the next, such as customs, arts and
others Mangain Marga is a tradition of giving a clan to someone who is not
Batak. This can happen because it is motivated by inter-ethnic marnages between
Batak and Non-Batak tribes so that the non-Batak couple will get recognition in
the family and customs as well as a position in Dalihan Na Tolu, if a clan is not
given to the non-Batak couple then he will not be recognized in customs (even)
though he is accepted in the family) and also will not get a position rights and
obligations in adat After explaining the description of the Mangain Marga
tradition in the Toba Batak culture, the author finds that a Toba Batak who wants
to marry and form a household with a non-Batak Toba partner must carry out the
Mangain Marga tradition to get a clan.
