dc.description.abstract | Background: Skin to skin contact method was applicable lo maintain
stabilization of newborn. However it's important to get more information on
skin to skin contact method towards behavioral states of term newborn.
Objective: To evaluate the effect of t hour versus 2 hours skin to skin
contact on behavioral states of term newborn
Methods: A comparative study was conducted on 53 term newborn at
Sundari hospital Medan from 1st March to 30th March 2014. The samples
were divided into two groups. Subjects were treated by skin to skin
contact for t hour as a crntrol and subjects for 2 hours as a cases.
Behavioral states was assesed by using Brazelton behavioral state scale
on fifth hours postnatal. Data were analyzed by using fisheds Exact and
Chi Square test.
Result: This study found total of 26 subjects for 2 hours (case) and 27
subjects were treated by skin to skin contact for t hour (control). A total 53
term newborns were enrolled. There was 44 (84.9%) showed changes in
sleep behavior, there was no significant different between both of group
(skin to skin contact for t hour and 2 hours) (P> O.O5). From the results
of the data, there was no significant difference of behavior wake states
and sleep stiates changes in both groups (p> O.O5)). There was no
significant differences in each condition of behavior states in the two
groups (P > 0.05).
Conclutions: This study found, skin to skin contact shor|s a comfortable
state for sleep than wake. Skin to skin contact for t hour can provide a
change at this stage of the condition of the behavioral states and
stabilizing infant's condition, especially the condition of infant sleep
