DITA SARI PRABUNINGRUM : Effect of Particle Length Size and Water Glass
Post-Treatment on Quality of Particleboard Made From Sorghum Bagasse.
Under supervised IRAWATI AZHAR and APRI HERI ISWANTO
In the previous research, the problem of particleboard made from sorghum
bagasse with Urea Formaldehyde resin were low value in dimensional
stability, modulus of elasticity (MOE) and internal bond (IB). This research will
give the solution to overcome of that problems. The objective of this research
were to (1) evaluate the effect of length size particle on physical and mechanical
properties of particleboard. (2) Evaluate water glass post-treatment on
particleboard properties. The first research: Sorghum bagasse was cutted into 3,
5, and 7 cm length size. Furthermore, the particles were dried until
approximately of 4% moisture content. Amount of 10% UF resin used for binding.
Hot pressing process was conducted in 1300C temperature for 10 minute and 30
kg cm-2 pressure. For water glass post-treatment, 3 cm particle was used in this
research. The manufacturing process of particleboard was similar with the first
research. Board sample was immersed in waterglass on several concentration
0%, 30%, 50%, 70%, and 100% for 10 minute. Therefore, sample were oven
dried at 800C for 24 hours. The result showed that, for the first research: the
thickness swelling (TS) and internal bond (IB) did not fulfill of requirement JIS A
5908 (2003). According to all the test parameter, 3 cm length size of particle
were resulting of the best properties compared with 5 and 7 cm length size. For
the second research: WG post- treatment able to reduce of thickness swelling
almost 30%. However, the thickness swelling did not fulfilled yet of standard.
The mechanical properties showed that negative trend in MOR, MOE and IB
parameter. Waterglass post-treatment and drying after treatment were suspected
as the one factor in reducing of mechanical properties.
