This undergraduate thesis discusses the process of learning music and the
physical behavior in playing sarune in the Karo community in Kabanjahe district.
Sarune is the bearer of the melody in the gendang sarune ensemble. Sarune is
classified as a double reed aerophone. A person who is able to master and play a
sarune is called a penarune. The purpose of this undergraduate thesis is to add
insight about sarune and help people learn to be a penarune. To become a penarune
has a long process and the author found that there are people who want to learn
sarune, so this is the problem that the author wants to discuss. When learning
sarune, students usually facilitate their fingering or pelawir jari so they can play the
patterns of palying sarune, ngombang sarune for tuning when playing sarune and
usually when they become a penarune, penarune usually knows how to make or
repair a anak sarune or reed on a sarune, and then have a group or teman
sendalanen, so they can play in the event and become a penarune. This study uses
qualitative research methods and conducts a literature study as initial data, field
studies which include observation, interviews, recording, use of record documents.
The theory used is Learning theory which discusses the process of students
becoming musicians and Physical Behavior which discusses physical behavior in
producing sound by Alan Parkhurst Merriam. The results obtained from this study
are to be able to know the process of a sarune learning sarune and the way a
penarune plays a sarune.
