Individual adaptive coping strategy is needed for post major surgery patients in order to minimize pain which is suffered by patients after surgical process. When patients coping are beginning to be adaptive, the intensity of pain will decrease in the coping strategy, either by problem focus coping or emotion focus coping. The objective of the research is to find out the correlation between coping strategy and the intensity of pain in post major surgery patients in RSUP H. Adam Malik, Medan. The research uses quantitative method with cross sectional design. The samples consisted of 96 post major surgery patients with the category of post oncology operation with digestive, using Spearman statistic test. The result of the research show that there is the correlation between coping strategy, either problem focus coping or emotion focus coping, and the intensity of pain in post major surgery patients (α < 0.005). After it was identified, it was found that the type of coping strategy used on the majority of patients was emotion focus coping with social withdrawal domain and on the minority of patients is problem focus coping with express emotion domain. It is recommended that nurses should give support to patients to increase adaptive coping strategy by giving intervention related to the increase in patients' coping strategy in order to prevent the incidence of patients maladaptive coping.en_US
