(Pongo abelii) and People Perception on Their Existence in Community Field (A Case Study in Subdistrict of Batang Serangan, Langkat District). Under Academic Supervision of PINDI PATANA and MA’RIFATIN ZAHRA.
Orangutan (Pongo abelii) found in subdistrict of Batang Serangan,
Langkat District, is living in community field dominated by rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis). Then orangutans destroyed and feeding the community crops. This field research has been conducted since June 2008 until August 2008. The objective would be compare the feeding time and feeding rate between male and female orangutans and the availability of feed, and to explain the perception of peoples on existence of orangutans in the region.
The observation used the focal animal smpling method, and recording of
feeding time data was instantaneous in two minutes, and feeding rate was by ad libitum. To know the availability of feed, singular plot method based on species area curve was used. To know the perception of people, the purposive sampling interview was conducted. Data analysis of feeding activity dan feeding rate used the Mann-Whitney test, for availability of feed the important value index and diversity of Shannon-Wiener, and for analysis of interview data the descriptive analysis was made.
The result of research indicated that the feeding activity and feeding rate
of female orangutan and male orangutan there was no significant difference. The availability of feed in the area has important value index in seedlings (125%), saplings (200%), poles (282,64%), and trees (162,13%), dominated by species of rubber (Hevea brasiliensis). For diversity index of Shannon-Wiener in seedlings (0,8), saplings (0), poles (0,1583), and trees (1,1885), was generally low. The conclusion of interview result was that people did not support the existence of orangutans in the area and preferred displacing the orangutans to natural habit. | en_US |
