CHRISTINE ANASTASIA TARIGAN: Variation of Particle Size and
Composition of Urea Formaldehyde - Styrofoam against the Quality of Particle
Board Made from Waste Oil Palm Trunks. Supervised by TITO SUCIPTO and
RUDI HARTONO.
The waste of oil palm trunks could be used as raw materials for
particleboards. The purpose of these study were to evaluate the physical and
mechanical properties, the resistance of particle board against termite attack and
evaluate the best composition of UF – styrofoam. The treatment variation were
particle size (20, 35 and 50 mesh) and comparison of adhesive content between
urea formaldehyde and styrofoam (60:40 ; 70:30 : 80:20 : 90:10). Board were
made with size 25 cm x 25 cm x 1 cm with a target density of 0.7 gr/cm2 and press
25 kg/cm2 for 10 minute. The results would be compared by SNI 03-2105-2006. It
showed that density, moisture content, water absorption, thickness swelling,
modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture and internal bond, were 0.52-0.60
g/cm3
;10.04-11.19%;51.0-175.1%;8.6-24.3%;2005-4235kg/cm2
;13-41kg/cm2
;0.6-
2.1 kg/cm2 respectively. Physical properties (density and moisture content)
fullfilled the standard SNI 03-2105-2006, the thickness swelling were not fullfilled
the standard. All of MOE and MOR properties didn’t fullfill the standard, and for
Internal Bond only 2 board that fullfilled standard that is board with comparison
of UF: SF = 90:10 by 20 mesh particle size, and comparison 90:10 by 35 mesh
particle size. The best combination of particle size is 20 mesh and comparison of
UF adhesive: styrofoam is 90:10.
