The purpose of this study is to explain the strategies or movement patterns
of HMI, PII and Tarbiyah in North Sumatrafor defending hijab in the new order
era. The three movements were together as the response for the problem about the
using of hijab until 1983-1993. Based on the problem, this study was done to
answer about (1) how the relationship between the new order government and
Islamic movements (2) how the patterns of Islamic students organizations for
defending the using of hijab and (3)what the detentions that faced by these three
movements. The theories that used to answer the research questions are social
movement by James M. Hensellin, social movement typology by Paul B.Harton
and Chester Hunt and the concept of human rights.
The method in this study is interview as the main technique in collecting
data. This study depend on the result of analysis from interview and the relevance
with the theories that used. The detentions that face by the Islamic students
organization came from various parties which had purpose to forbid the using of
hijab. However it could not reduce the spirit and courage to arrange the strategies
to socialize the using of hijab. Some of actions by HMI, PII and Tarbiyah were
done without violence
