Implementation of the campaign in various forms will be carried out by
presidential and vice presidential candidates that step ahead in the general
election. Political issues also become part of the form's campaign presidential and
vice presidential candidates to attract the attention of voters and also establish the
preferences of the voters. This research aims to determine the effect of political
issue that is growing at the election for president and vice president in 2014 to
political preferences of voters. The theory which is used in this research is the
Mass Communications Effects and Rational Choice.
The population in this research was based on the most often published
universities in the online news portal website on politics those are North Sumatra
University students and University HKBP Nommensen about 37.239 people. To
calculate the number of samples the researcher used Taro Yamane formula with
10% precision and 90% confidence interval of the obtained sample of 100 people.
Research sites are in North Sumatra University and the University of HKBP
Nommensen. While the sampling technique using Multistage Random Sampling.
There are two (2) variables that were examined in this study, namely Political
Issues (X), and Political Preferences of Voters (Y). Data collection tool used in
this study was a questionnaire. The data is processed using tools (Statistics
Package and Social Science) 20.0 for Windows.
As for the hypothesis test using correlation coefficient formula levels
system by Pearson Product Moment by SPSS 20.0, the result r = 0.796 with 0.043
significance. To determine the influence of the power of the variables X and Y are
used R² of 63.4%, it means that the influence props voter behavior society
campaign against the remaining 36.6% is influenced by other variables not
examined in this research. Because of significant (two-tailed) is smaller than the
alpha (α = 0.05), indicating that the variable APK positive effect on voter
behavior variables. It can be concluded H0 is accepted, that there are significant
political issue that is growing at a general election for president and vice president
in 2014 against political preferences of students.
