Hypertension is a health problem which needs to be paid attention because of
its high increasing prevalence rate and the long-term effect it causes. Based on the
_ data from the Profile of Pematangsiantar Health Service 2009, the prevalence of
hypertension in Siantar Marihat Subdistrict was 23.54%.
The purpose of this observational study with case-control design was to
analyze the influence of the pattern of food consumption on the incident of
hypertension in the elderly of Batak tribe in Siantar Marihat Subdistrict in 2011.
The relationship between the certain effect (disease or health condition) and
certain risk factor was studied by comparing 54 cases and 108 controls and matching
them in terms of age and sex. The data obtained were analyzed through conditional
logistic regression tests by using the epi info program.
The result of bivariate analysis between risk factor and the incident of
hypertension showed that the factors which did not have any influence on the incident
of hypertension were eating pattern I (p>0,25 and OR=0, 792). The factors having
influence on the incident of hypertension were sport activity (p<0.25 and OR=2,343)
and eating pattern (p<0.25 and OR=6,74). The result of conditional logistic
regression tests showed that the most dominant factor which influence the incident of
hypertension was eating pattern (p<0. 05).
The health workers are suggested to do something to prevent the incident of
hypertension through promotive activities such as providing community members
with extensions, producing leaflets and banners on hypertension prevention, and
advising the elderly and his/her family to treat the hypertension by taking the elderly
routinely to the Puskesmas to have a regular check-up and take the medicine for
hypertension.
