Abstract

Self-medication, if it is practiced properly on a medical basis, can help people in curing themselves in a safe and effective way. The purpose of this study was to find out the influence of pharmacy counseling

on society's knowledge and attitude towards self-medication. This study was quasi- experimental involving a group of subject as many as 64 respondents in which

assessment was conducted before and after the pharmacy counseling. The data were collected through questionnaires using the Wilcoxon test with significance (a) level of 0.05. The Wilcoxon test showed a significant result where p = 0.0001 (< 0.05), meaning that the provision of pharmacy counseling to self-medication patients, who came to the pharmacy to increase their knowledge and attitude, proved to be beneficial. The 'poor' knowledge level of 35 people before counseling changed to 10 people after counseling, the 'fair' knowledge level of 36 people before counseling changed to 20 people after counseling, and the 'good' knowledge level of 13 people before counseling changed to 24 people after counseling. The 'disagree' attitude level of 4 people before counseling changed to 6 people after counseling, the 'undecided' attitude level of 46 people before counseling changed to 27 people after counseling, and the 'agree ' attitude level of 12 people changed to 31 people after counseling. There was an increase in the knowledge and attitude of people, who came to the pharmacy to buy medicines without medical prescription (antipyretic analgesics, gastrointestinal and respiratory medicines), towards self-medication after being given pharmacy counseling by the pharmacist. It is recommended that the pharmacist provide pharmacy counseling at the pharmacy and that the Health Department, particularly in the field of Pharmacy, Health Assurance and Facility provide an award to pharmacists who have conducted pharmacy counseling services.
