Pentose phosphate pathway is a significant pathway to maintain the life of erythrocyte in order to function normally and to sustain stability. One of the mostly found hereditary erythrocyte abnormality is enzyme G6PD deficiency, if stressed oxidation occurs Heinz bodies will be formed in the erythrocyte. The purpose of this research is to observe the image of Heinz body in the erythrocyte of a patient who suffers from G6PD deficiency and the distribution of G6PD deficiency, the relation of Heinz body according to G6PD enzyme concentration, gender and age. Cross sectional study and non probability consecutive sampling methods which fulfill the inclusive and exclusive criteria with a sample of 35 people, of which there were 23 males and 12 females who have obtained informed consent and ethical clearance, using methyl violet staining for the peripheral blood smear preparation which was carried out in the Multidiscipline Laboratorium in USU medical faculty and Clinical Pathology Department in R Adam Malik Hospital Medan. The data obtained was analyzed by Anova, Kolmogorov-Smimov dan Kruskal-Wallis by using SPSS 11,5 computer program. The result achieved shows that the image distribution of Heinz body varies in the sample examined, some were negative, a few (1-3), medium (4-6), and many (>6) per 1000 erythrocytes. In conclusion, G6PD deficiency is more commonly found in males (65,7%) than in females (34,3%), the image of Heinz bodies were found in 26 patients who suffer from enzyme G6PD deficiency (74,3%), there was no significant difference in the activity of enzyme G6PD deficiency according to the stage where Heinz body was found (p=0,733), and also there was no significant difference in the average of Heinz body distribution according to gender (p=0,242) and age (p = 0, 193).en_US
