Background: Leptin is the adipokines, which is considered to have a role in obesity and related metabolic dysfunction. Leptin rcsistance is likely to undedie the cognitive dysfunction associated with diabetes mellitus. Objective: This study aimed to determine the conelation of plasma leptin levels and cognitive function in patients with and without diabetes mellitus. Methods: This study was a cross sectional study, with subTbcts DM and non DM patients who were matched. Subjecfs examined cognitive function by MMSE and CDT, then the patient fasted 1G12 hours to be examined plasma leptin levels. Resul6.' From the 80 samples of patients with and without DM were gained 42 women (62.5/o) and 38 men (47.5o/o) with a mean age of 51.85 t 8.47. ln patients with DM and without DM were the largest tribe of the Batak of 25 people (62.5yo) and 29 (72.5o/o) respectively. The mean MMSE in DM patients was 24.03 x 2.91 and 28.68 t 1.59 in patients without DM. There are significant differcnces between the MMSE scoing average of DM patients with patients without DM. (p <0.05). The mean plasma leptin levels in patients with DM was 16887.45 *, 15171.11 and 21447.11 t 15154.38 in patients without DM. The mean BMI was 24.96 t 3.67 in patients with DM aN 26.25x 4.00 in patients without DM. The mean MMSE in both DM contrcl, moderate and bad consisfs of 24.64 t 2.91, 25.75 *, 4.35 and 23.48 x 2.63, respectively. Therc were no significant differences between DM conhol good, moderate and poor (p = 0.338) There was no significant correlation between leptin levels and cognitive function in patients with and without DM with r = 0.084, p = 0.608 and r= 0.127, p = 0.436, rcspectively. Gonclusion: The rcsults of this study indicate that therc is no significant conelation between leptrn leve/s and cognitive function in patients with DM and non DMen_US
