Abstract
Background Short stature still remains one of many growing problem especially in developing countries. Studies have shown that short siature l.oa* to higher risk of overweight and obesity by increasing body fat. Futhermore, it leads to high.; risk of non
communicable disease such as higher brood prsssure in adulthood.
objective To assess the association between fat short stature adolescents and their higher
blood pressure.
Methods A cross sectional sfudy was conducted among 181 short stature adolescents aged
12-17 years old in Singkuang, North Sumatera fromlpril to May 2016, Subjects w:ere
divided into two groups, namely increased weight and normal weight. Higho blood
pressure was defined as systolic or diastolic blood pressure > 90'h percEntile aicording to
The Fourth Report from the National High Blood Pressure Educaiion program Working
Group on Children and Adolescents. Chi-square test rvas used to assess the association
between fat short stature and higher blood pressure. Significancy was set at p<0.05 and
95% confidence interval (CI).
Results Ofl81 adolescents who met criteria, 73 had increased weight and 108 had normal
weight Among 73 fat short stature adolescents,63ort had higher blood pressure. There was
a significant association between fat short statureand higher blood pressure (P : 0.01 I pR:
1.552 95%Ct :1.249-4.223).
Conclusion There is a significant association between fat short stature adolescents and
their higher blood pressure.
