Background : Alloxan can cause experimental diabetic conditions (hyperglycemia)
in animal models through oxidation and the fonnation of free radicals ( oxidative
stress) which damages pancreatic ~ cells. The ethanol extract of the henna leaves can
decrease oxidative stress. This study aimed to determine the effect of ethanol extract
of henna leaves on decreasing blood sugar content, increasing the activity of
superoxide dismutase enzyme and histopathology image of pancreatic wistar rats
induced alloxan.
Method : This was an experimental study with posttest only control group design,
using rat (Rattus norvegicus) strains wistar which randomized in five groups:
negative control group, positive control, group which got ethanol extract group of
200mg/kgbb, 400mg/kgbb and 600mg/kgbb.
Results : This research showed that there was significant decrease in blood sugar,
compared with the control group. There was activity of superoxide dismutase
enzyme was increased but statistically insignificant. Observation of pancreatic
histopathology showed a change in diameter in the group receiving ethanol extract of
the leaf.
Conclusion : The conciusion of the research was that ethanoi extract of the henna
leaves 400mg/kgbb decrease blood glucose content of rat significantly, there was no
significant difference the increase in the activity of superoxide dismutase enzyme
and there was a difference of diameter of langerhans island in the group receiving
ethanol extract of the henna leaves 400mg / kgbb.
