This study aims to classify the addition and reduction of language elements, such as
words, phrases, clauses and to describe the translation techniques in the translation
texts of a bilingual history book “Perang Kolonial Belanda di Aceh: The Dutch
Colonial War in Aceh” as well. This study focuses on product analysis. The data of
this study are identified texts having addition and reduction of language elements that
are taken from the first three chapters consisting of 519 sentences as the samples. The
descriptive-qualitative research is used to describe the addition and reduction of
language elements of SL and TL completely using contrastive analysis theory that
compares Indonesian language as SL and English as 11. Besides, the writer also
used direct and indirect translation techniques theory by Molina-Albir, gain and lost
theory by Nida-Taber, and explicit and implicit meaning theory by Larson to know
the translation techniques chosen in translating the history book. After the 519
samples analysed, the results showed that 271 data have no the addition or reduction
of language elements while 248 data identified having changed either in SL or TL.
The 248 data having the addition or reduction of language elements consisting of 79
(31.85%) addition data, 117 (47.17%) reduction data, and 52 (20.95%) couplet data:
addition’ reduction. There are several conclusions from the results, first, the
‘amplification technique is used dominantly for the addition of the language elements *
and the reduction technique is used dominantly for the reduction of language
elements. Second, the addition of the language element of SL and TL is not
identically using addition technique, but the amplification and description techniques
can also caused the addition of language elements, third, from the analysed data
samples, which have the addition or reduction of language elements syntactically,
there are no data caused the addition or reduction of information semantically, either
in SL or TL. However, the addition and reduction information done to bridge the gap
of language and culture system of the two languages.
