The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of the variation of
tempering temperature on the fatigue strength of the steel material of Thyssen 6582.
The tempering was first carried out for the fatigue test specimen by using a furnace at
the temperatures of 100°C, 200°C, 300°C, 400°C, 500°C, and 600°C for 20 minutes.
To obtain the fatigue strength, a test was carried out by using a fatigue test machine
of Cantilever Rotating Bending with the speed of 850 revolution per minute (rpm).
Mechanical tests such as tensile test, Rockwell C hardness test, and microstructure
observation by using an optical microscope and Scanning Electron Microscope
(SEM) were conducted to obtain supporting data in analyzing the fatigue strength of
the material. The result of this study shows that the fatigue strength is very influenced
by tempering temperature. At the tempering temperature of 300°C, the fatigue
strength reaches up to 500 MPa and this is the highest fatigue strength of steel
material of Thyssen 6582 compared to the fatigue strength tested under other
tempering temperatures. Based on the S-N Curve, the tempering at the temperature of
300°C can increase the fatigue strength for 22% of the fatigue strength of material
obtained without process of tempering, and will increase for 32% compared to the
lowest fatigue strength obtained at the tempering temperature 100°C.
