Palmitamide (hexadecanamide) has been synthesized by reacting palmitic acid and
ammonia gas at a pressure of 100 psi, the temperature of 1800C for 10 hours using a
nickel catalyst with a yield of 77.66%. FT-IR spectrum showed two strong absorptions
at 3362.36 cm-1 and 3195.14 cm-1 due to amide group (NH2). 1H-NMR spectrum
showed four chemical shifts, at δNH2 5.4 ppm (broad); δCH2 2.19 ppm (triplet); δCH2
1.5 ppm (multiplet); δCH3 0.9 ppm (triplets) respectively, showed that palmitamide
has been formed.
