One of water soluble chitosan derivative is quaternary chitosan. Dimethyl chitosan derived from the reaction of chitosan with formaldehyde and formic acid. Trimethyl chitosan chloride was synthesized through the alkylation of dimethyl chitosan with methyl iodide in methyl pyrrolidone which further substitution reaction was with hydrochloric acid. The formation of dimethyl chitosan was supported by spectrum of FT-IR with the wave number at 1473.62 cm-1 which represents vibration of –C-H bending from CH3. While the formation of trimethyl chitosan chloride supported by spectrum of FT-IR with the wave number at 1473.62 cm-1 which represents vibration of –C-H bending from CH3 and the wave number 1381,03 cm-1 which represents vibration of –N-C- and also spectrum 1H-NMR represents proton of methyl in quarternary amin with the chemical shift at 2.9432 ppm.
