In this thesis, entitled lhe Design for the System of the Drying of Cassava
Chips by Using Solar Dryer (A case Study on Home Industry at Tuntungan I, Deli
Serdang District), it was .fonnd that the system o.f tlrying cassm,o chips u,a,s ,still
conventional and relied only on the heat of the sun so that the drying was not
maximal. The use of solar dryer technique can give the estimation of shorter drytng
tiiiie bi- opiintizing the absot'ptioii of tlic licat af lhc sun so that il cati reducc
production cost. The solor dryer is designed, based on the evaluation of the
anthropometric datafrom the cssscNa chips operators at Tuntungan I Villoge, for the
sake of the comfort and effecti'r'eness of the operators in doing their work.
Thts research yielded the destgn of solar dryer wtth the capacity of one kg of
casswu/process. The use of the solar dryer system can increase the capacity of
cassava chips to 15094, compared to using conventional system. The final water
content of cassava chips was 7.295, while the acceptable threshold of woter was the
marimum o.f I0%. The use qf solar dryer s;tstem can also reduce the length qf drying

The result of the economic anaiysis (in the rationalization and simulation
forms) shou,ed that the ,tse of solar dryer system yielded Net ProJit Marginal (NPM)
of 29.66% with money circulation per month was Rp. 72,155,173, while the use of
conventional system ytelded Net Prolit Margiral (NPM) of 5.37% wtth money
circulation per month was Rp. 10,336, j30.
It is recommended that the future researches conduct their researches on the
use of other absorbents of the heat of the sun and the use of blow
