dc.description.abstract | Caries detector dye is a material that is needed in cavity preparation because often
found difficulty in distinguishing infected dentine with affected dentine, but this
material has a weaknesses because it can cause false staining on the healthy cavity
walls. This can lead to excessive tissue removal. This study aims to determine the
potential of the ethanol extract of the sappan wood as an alternative material of caries
detector dye in detecting carious dentin. The study sample consisted of 30 permanent
premolar and molar teeth with carious dentin and divided into three treatment groups,
ie ethanol extract of the sappan wood concentration 1 %; concentration 2.5% and 1 %
caries detector dye acid red (comparison). Assessment accuracy of the test material
was done by counting the number of application of dye into the experiment side until
no dentin stained in the three treatment groups. Furthermore, the sample is split with
a thickness of 5 µm and haematoxyline eosin staining for histologic examination.
Data were statistically analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney Test.
The results showed that there were significant differences between the number of
applications dye on the treatment group were given ethanol extract of the sappan
wood 1% with the other treatment groups (p<0.001). The accuracy of the dye in
detecting carious dentin were analyzed by Chi Square Test. The results showed there
were significant difference between the treatment groups were given ethanol extract
of sappan wood 1 % with the other treatment group. The ethanol extract of sappan
wood 1 % has the potential to be developed as an alternative material of commercial
