Agricultural sector in the Indonesian economy plays an important role,
especially in providing employment. It cannot be separated from women’s role. In
various food production countries, women play an important role in the process of
food production. Raja Haluan village was the extension of Raya Usangvillage in
2002 with the area of 1588 hectares. In general, the people of Raya Uluan village
are farmers who live on farm and its product.
The research was descriptive. Its objective was to find out the contribution
of female farmers to the social economy of their families. The samples consisted
of 32female farmers as respondents. The data were analyzed by using descriptive
qualitative method, distributing questionnaires, and conducting interviews in the
form of frequency distribution.
Based on the result of the analysis, it was concluded that female farmers
worked in the agricultural sector because it was a tradition from generation to
generation. The female farmers at Raya Huluan village did almost the whole
process of land and crop cultivation until harvest and marketing. By doing in the
agricultural sector, they used their income for their own need and their families’.
Female farmers have their contribution to the family’s need for food,
clothing, and housing. The also have their contribution to their families’ health,
education for their children, business capital, and savings. They can also interact
properly with families and neighbors. Female farmers at Raya Huluan village are
hard workers who are able to earn a living, play their role as mothers, and get
along very well with the people in the neighborhood.
