Introduction: Orthodontist prescribe mouthwash for their patients especially since most of patients do not follow a satisfactory oral hygiene and have high risk dental caries. Stainless steel brackets that exposed by mouthwash can release nickel. Corrosion and nickel release can induced body allergic reaction and make more friction during orthodontic treatment. This in vitro study aims to measure nickel release of stainless steel bracket that immersed in mouthwash. Methods: Thirty-six stainless steel bracket immersed in artifisial saliva, chlorhexidine, and Piper betle Linn mouthwash. All brackets stored in inkubator for 1, 3, 5, and 7 weeks. Nickel release measured by Atomic absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). Results: The results showed a significant differences of nickel release in all groups (p>0.05). Nickel release increased over time during the immersion in all groups. Conclusions: Chlorhexidine mouthwash cause highest nickel release, followed by Piper betle Linn mouthwash, and artifisial saliva.
