    Abstract
Until now pain is a problem in the world of health. Pain as one of the symptoms that arises, is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience. One of the causes of pain is surgery or surgery. Postoperative patients experience pain as a result of tissue discontinuity or surgical scars. Postoperative patients experience complaints of acute pain after the influence of anesthetic drugs wears off. During pain, the patient usually looks grimacing, in pain, pulse increases, sweats, breathes faster, pale, screams, cries, and blood pressure increases. It requires the existence of a treatment technique to reduce pain. Nurses using their knowledge can deal with pain problems both independently and collaboratively using two approaches, namely the pharmacological approach and the non-pharmacological approach. One of the non-pharmacological approaches is by doing positive self-talk techniques. The purpose of this study was to carry out nursing care by using positive self-talk techniques with VR (virtual reality) media to reduce the pain intensity of postoperative patients. Assessment of the pain scale using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) pain intensity measurement scale. The location of the practice is in the inpatient room of the University of North Sumatra hospital. This positive self-talk technique was given to 5 postoperative patients who experienced pain and was implemented for 3 days. Self talk therapy is done to help refute unreasonable beliefs and develop healthier thinking, which will result in more positive self-talk. After positive self-talk therapy was carried out, the result was that the scale of pain intensity in patients could be reduced thereby accelerating the healing process and creating a sense of well-being.
