The idea of this research is to investigate adsorption capacity of black sand
to adsorp cadmium ion (Cd2+) dissolving in the solution on pH 4,5. There are
three variables in this study such as the variations of size of sand, rotation
speed, and initial concentration of adsorbate metal ion in solution. The black
sand variation sizes are 10 mesh, 20 mesh and 40 mesh. Variation of rotation
speeds are 100, 150, and 200 rpm. And variation of initial concentrations are
30 ppm, 50 ppm and 70 ppm. This research consist of two main steps such as,
pre-treatment and batch adsorption to determine adsorption capacity and
modeling of adsorption kinetic. For the size variation, the best adsorption
ability was obtained for 40 mesh with the adsorption capacity 0,1182 mg/g.
The variation of rotation speed, the best result was 0,1720 mg/g at 200 rpm and
for concentration variation was 0,1718 mg/g at 70 ppm. The interaction on
sand surface with metal ions was confirmed with FTIR. Model kinetics was
used to identify the interaction type with the result that as chemist-sorption and
physic-sorption was occurred. Adsorption was tend to diffuse on inter particle
porous area of the adsorbent.
