In planning a structure, the first thing which should be done by an engineer is
the utility and function of which is being designed related to the load, especially
earthquake load. Therefore, a structure specialist will devise a way how to pattern
various styles of element which will be transferred to specific points. In technical
mechanics, it is explained that inertia of a pro.file highly determines the choice of
pro.file dimension which be used. This is because of the variation and load direction
is varied in each construction. Inertias of hollow steel pipe has the same value for all
directions so that it will be stronger in carry the load than the other pro.files. The
problem faced by the writer during his work was the problem of connecting; in
connecting a pipe with pro.file one used the same type of pro.file, using welding. In
this thesis, the writer attempted to make an experiment of connecting a hollow steel
pipe with Wide Flange pro.file by using external diaphragm plate in order that in the
connecting area there would be semi stiff behavior by using bolt as the connector
with gradual loading until the bolt melted. There were two specimen used in the
experiment: using stiffener and not using stiffener. Each experiment was compared
with Finite Element Method (FEM) program. The percentage of additional load
because of the stiffener was 34.61% and the difference in deflection was 40.58%,
while the percentage of the increase in stiffener in the result of the experiment was
157.39% and the result ofhe Finite Element Method (FEM) was 159.20%.
