Based on the Indonesian Health and Demogaphy Survey (SDKI) 2002-2003, the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) in Indonesia was still 307 per 100,000 live births. According to the recapitulation of maternal audit report of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, the maternal mortality rate in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province is 210 per 100,000 live births. According to the Annual Report of Tamiang Health Service, the maternal mortality rate in Aceh Tamiang District in 2007 was 2.09 per 1000 live birth. The data for this observational analytical study with case control design were collected through the study of case group consisting of 36 mothers who lost their lives during labor and the control Soup which consists of 72 mothers who were safe with the ratio 1:2. The data obtained were analyzed through univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analysis. The result of multiple logistic regression analysis shows that mother's age, education, occupation, history of disease, history of pregnancy/delivery complication and parity and birth attendant significantly influenced the incident of maternal mortality. The variables of health promotion and the distance from the mother's house to the delivery facility did not have any significant influence on maternal mortality. A woman who delivered a baby when she was < 20 and > 35 years old has a low educational background, a hard worker with history of disease, pregnancy/delivery complication and parity > 4, and whose birth attendant was not a health worker will have the probability of safe delivery of 74.83%, while a woman who delivered a baby when she was not in a risky age, has high educational background not a hard worker, does not have history of disease, does not have pregnancy/delivery complication whose parity was only 2 - 3, and whose birth attendant was a health worker will have the probability of safe delivery of about 99.9 %. It is recommended that, in the attempt to minimize the maternal mortality rate (MMR), the Head of Health Service of Aceh Tamiang District and the staff could continue the save motherhood and making pregnancy safer programs by including these programs in its strategic plan(renstra) for the coming year.
