The purpose of this survey study with cross-sectional approach conducted from May to August 2014 was to analyze the influence of style of leadership (authoritarian, democratic, liberal) of the head of room on the performance of the nurses on duty at dr. Pirngadi General Hospital Medan in 2014. The population of this study was all of the 439 nurses on duty and 176 of them were selected to be the samples for this study. The data for this study were obtained through observation and questionnaire-based interviews. The data obtained were analyzed through multiple logistic regression tests at α = 0. 05. The result of the research showed that, statistically, the style of leadership (authoritarian, democratic, liberal) had positive and significant influence on the performance of the nurses on duty at dr. Pirngadi General Hospital Medan in 2014. Democratic leadership style was the variable which had the most dominant influence on the performance of the nurses on duty. It is suggested that (1) the management and heads of rooms at dr. Pirngadi General Hospital Medan (a) apply the democratic style of leadership or combine the democratic and liberal style of leaderships that a good and comfortable cooperation can be established between the superior and his/her subordinate so in working, the nurses on duty are able to do their job without compulsion and pressure, (b) try to give a disciplinary sanction (punishment) to those who do not document the nursing care in accordance with the existing regulation through a persuasive approach commencing from a warning to a serious sanction and provide an appreciation to the performance achieved, (2) the nurses on duty should prioritize the high work ethics in providing services to the patients especially in terms of nursing care implementation. | en_US |
