dc.description.abstractChoosing a safe food is the very important behavior that must be known by the community members. But there are still many community members with less knowledge about choossing a safe food that the health education through extension both through lecture and interpersonal communication methods is very much needed. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study with pretest-posttest group design conducted from January to July 2014 was to find out the effectiveness of extension through lecture and interpersonal communication methods on mother's knowledge and attitude in chossing a safe food. The population of this study was the mothers living in the working areas of Puskesmas (Community Health Center) Simalingkar and 60 of them were selected to be the samples for this study and divided into 2 (two) groups consisting of 30 mothers for the group provided an extension through lecture method and the other 30 mothers for the group provided an extension through interpersonal communication method. The data for this study were obtained through interviews with the respondents and the data obtained were analyzed through independent t-test and paired t-test at the level of confidence 95%. The result of the analysis showed that the extension on choosing a safe food had influence on mother's knowledge with p = 0. 000 through lecture method and p = 0. 000 through interpersonal communication method, and on mother's attitude with p = 0. 000 through lecture method and p = 0. 000 through interpersonal communication method. The result of this study showed that there was a difference between the knowledge (p = 0. 000) and attitude (p = 0. 048) of the mothers given an extension through lecture and interpersonal communication methods. The mothers are suggested to improve their knowledge and attitude in choosing a safe food to consume through various media, and the mothers who have attended the extension through either lecture or interpersonal communication methods should provide information to the other mothers. The Head of Puskesmas Simalingkar is suggested to improve the knowledge and attitude of the mothers in choosing a safe food through various methods and media.en_US
