Background. Epilepsy is a brain disorder characterized by of excessive neuronal
activity which is abnormal and temporary. Stigma toward epilepsy gives a heavy
burden toward the quality of life of people with epilepsy. Those stigmas are based
by the society’s knowledge of the epilepsy itself. Method. The type of this research
is descriptive research with cross sectional design. Data were collected by total
sampling technique using a questionnaire. The sample of this research were 86
teachers of Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri 5 Medan. Result. Majority of the
respondent were women (78.8%), age between 51-60 (69.4%), Batak ethnicity
(75.3%), and were on high economic status (48.2%). 98.8% of respondent had
well knowledge about epilepsy, 100% had positive attitude, and 79.9% had
negative behaviour toward people with epilepsy. 56.5% refused to marry people
with epilepsy and 54.1% refused if they have an in-laws that is people with
epilepsy. Conclusion. Teachers of Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri 5 Medan had
well knowledge of epilepsy, positive attitude, and negative behaviour toward
people with epilepsy.
