Background. Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common form of
bacterial infection worldwide. UTIs are caused mainly by E.coli. Other causes
include other gram-negative bacteria such as Klebsiella, gram-positive
bacteria such as Staphylococcal and Enterococcal, or fungi, viruses, and
parasites. Women are more susceptible to UTIs than men and the prevalence is
increasing in women aged 14-24 years. More than half of the female population
will develop a UTI at least once in their lifetime, so a good knowledge of UTI
is needed to allow timely intervention. In addition to knowledge, preventive
behavior is also an important effort to reduce the incidence of UTIs. Prevention
also serves to reduce the need for antibiotics. Aim. This study aims to determine
the level of knowledge and preventive behavior of female students from the
Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara, against lower urinary tract
infections. Method. The type of this research is descriptive. The research was
conducted using a questionnaire instrument of Knowledge Level of Lower
Urinary Tract Infection and Preventive Behavior of Lower Urinary Tract
Infection given to respondents. Results. From the knowledge level
questionnaire, 113 people (65.3%) had good knowledge, 45 people (26%) had
sufficient knowledge, and 15 people (8.7%) had poor knowledge. From the
preventive behavior questionnaire, as many as 153 people (88.4%) had good
behavior, 19 people (11%) had sufficient behavior, and 1 person (0.6%) had
