Background. Growth disorder is commonly found in major thalassemia patient. Repeated blood transfusion as treatment of major thalassemia can lead to accumulation of iron. Iron accumulation forms reactive oxygen species (ROS) in pituitary which can cause growth disorder. Objective. The main object of this study was to evaluate relationship of serum ferritin and growth disorder of major thalassemia pediatric patient in Haji Adam Malik Central General Hospital. Method. In this cross-sectional study, the serum ferritin and growth parameters (height and weight) were measured and analyzed from all pediatric patients of major thalassemia using total sampling technique. Results. From 60 patients, 65% had short stature according to height-for-age index, 56,7% had below 5th weight percentile according to weight-for-age index, but only 20% had underweight according to body mass indexfor- age. This study shows no significant relationship between serum ferritin and height, weight, and body mass index (p>0,05) using Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic test. Conclusion. There is no significant relationship between serum ferritin and growth disorder of major thalassemia pediatric patient in Haji Adam Malik Central General Hospital.en_US
