Background. Cardiac arrest is the most common emergency outside the hospital. Every year, about 400,000 Americans died by cardiac arrest. The first aid that can be given is by doing basic life support (BLS) not only by medical personnel but also can be done by existing non-medical personnel. Therefore, great knowledge is needed by everyone, in order to provide fast and precise handling. Aim. To determine the knowledge of non-medical personnel of FK USU before and after provided education about basic life support. Methods. This study used a quasi-experimental design with one group pretest-posttest design. Knowledge measurement is using questionnaires before and after provided education about basic life support. The sample of this study was 20 people. The statistical analysis used is paired samples t-test to see the effect of providing education on the level of knowledge about basic life support. Results. Before providing education, only 45% of respondents were sufficiently and well knowledgeable and then after providing education, there was an increasing to 100% well knowledgeable. In the paired-sample t-test, p value = 0.000 was obtained and indicated significant results. Conclusion. In respondents, there was a significant increase in knowledge about BLS, in particular about the general picture of cardiac arrest, CPR measures, recovery position, and indications of CPR stop.
