dc.description.abstractBackground: Land is a place for human activities. Soil can be contaminated by various factors. Soil is also a medium for development, storage and transmission of several types of worms, which are commonly referred to as Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH). Soil Transmitted Helminths infection is usually found in individuals with poor personal hygiene, low socioeconomic status and occupations that are at risk of infection. Most of the residents of Sukadono Hamlet works as pigs and chicken breeders. Therefore, the environment where residents live tends to be unclean and there is a lot of garbage and pet feces visible. This means the animal to defecate evenly in the settlement which will eventually contaminate the soil and may promote the development of the fertilized egg into the infective form. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of residential land in Sukadono Hamlet, Helvetia Village, Deli Serdang Regency. Methods: The sample in this study was 72 soil that was taken from the front, back, left or right direction of the house. The soil was examined for temperature, humidity, pH value using a Digital Soil Analyzer. Then the STH examination was carried out at the Laboratory of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra. This study used a descriptive-observational research method with a cross-sectional approach. The sample was selected using probability sampling technique with simple random sampling type. Results: The results showed that the soil conditions in Sukadono Hamlet, Helvetia Village, Deli Serdang Regency, were all in normal condition. The results of the STH examination also showed that (45,8%) of the 72 soil samples examined were positive for STH. Hookworms were found in (32,9%) soil samples, Ascaris lumbricoides species in (5,3%) soil samples, Strongyloides stercoralis species were found positive (7,9%) soil samples and STH mixture found in 2 (3.9%) soil samples. Conclusion: Residential land in Sukadono Hamlet, Helvetia Village, Deli Serdang Regency has been contaminated by Soil Transmitted Helminths.en_US
