dc.description.abstractBackground. Obesity is an excessive accumulation of fat tissue that can interfere with physical and psychosocial health, the prevalence of obesity in Indonesia based on Body Mass Index in the age group >18 years reached 21.8%. The increase in body weight is due to the high consumption of calories such as fizzy drinks, fast food and foods that contain a high blood glycemic index. Aim. This study aims to determine the relationship of fast food consumption with the occurrence of obesity. Methods. Research conducted analytically using a cross-sectional study design. The research samples were students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra class of 2019 to 2021 who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and were taken based on the probability sampling method with the proportionate stratified random sampling type. The research Data was taken through interviews with subjects regarding the frequency of fast food consumption and anthropometric examinations to measure weight, height, and Body Mass Index. Results. The prevalence of obesity in students from 2019 to 2021 was 36.4%. Frequent consumption of fast food by 40.9%. The value of energy intake with a median value of 2601.4 kcal. The results of statistical test calculations using spearman correlation test showed there is a relationship between fast food consumption with obesity (p=0.001), there is a relationship between the value of energy intake with obesity (p=0.001). Conclusion. There is a relationship between the frequency of fast food consumption and obesity. There is a relationship between the value of energy intake and obesity.en_US
